Sony’s successor to the PSP finally hits store shelves today in the UK. With a dissapointing second week of sales in Japan and controversy that had plagued the pre-launch, what does the future hold for the new kid on the block?

I’d like to point out that I don’t own a Vita myself but I have been able to play around with one. I still have my 1st gen phat PSP, so to me the Vita is a huge leap forward in terms of the much needed second analogue stick and the beautiful crisp OLED screen.

There have been all kinds of concerns raised about the battery life and price point of the Vita but the major controversy surrounding the device recently is the lack of UMD-passport support outside of Japan. This is a bit of a kick in the balls to PSP owners in the west and while some would consider it a deal breaker, I’m not too bothered about backwards compatability. I just look forward to getting my hands on MHP3rd when Capcom decide to localize it.

At the moment I can understand why consumers are reluctant to pick up this new iteration from Sony. There are a lot of bugs that need working out and I most certainly won’t be getting one anytime soon. This doesn’t mean that I don’t think the Vita won’t be a success, most people are probably tired of picking up 1st gen consoles only to have the price slashed a few months after release. It just seems to me that it’s always worth waiting until the inevitable price drop and updated version before taking the plunge.

Vita’s sales will definately pick up just like the 3DS, it will just take some time to win over the rest of us.
